After the opening of the indoor
swimming facilities in Cheltenham the future of the Lido came into
question.
There were times when the Lido would break even or show a slight
surplus, however after a poor summer in 1982 the Lido faced the
first calls to close or to sell the site.
Lido friends rallied round, a public petition was organised and the
Lido was protected for the next few years. In 1983 and 84 attendance
levels totalled over 232,000 proving the decision to be a good one.
The Lido now required ever more
additional money to maintain its ageing structure and the Local
Authority was finding it difficult to justify the level of
expenditure required;
* In 1967 the boiler was replaced from coal
to oil
* In 1972 a lower, safer chute was put in.
* In 1973 the 5m diving boards were removed as the minimal
depth for diving from 5m was 3.8m
* In 1976 the filtration plant was overhauled.
* In 1979 £2,000 was found to spend on the replacement of the
ceramic tile surround, non-rust rails and entry ladders. |
