Cheltenham's Outdoor Heated Swimming Resort

New Bathing Pool at Sandford Park

The project was finally completed in early 1935 at a cost of £15,700.

The opening ceremony was scheduled for the 25th May 1935. It was an important day for Cheltenham. The ceremony started at 3pm with a procession of open top motorcars travelling from outside the Municipal Offices carrying the Mayor of Cheltenham and his wife, along with dignitaries from neighbouring cities and towns from outside the Municipal Offices around to the Lido.

The dignitaries included the Mayor and Mayoress of Gloucester & Tewkesbury, the Borough Member of Cheltenham, the Sheriff of Gloucester, the Town Clerks of Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Cheltenham and the members of the Cheltenham Corporation.

500 mayoral guests awaited their arrival at the new bathing pool, along with a very large company of the general public. Almost as many watched the proceedings from Sandford Park looking through the new metal fence boundary.

It was a grand day with special trains and buses bringing people from all over the County to enjoy the warm water in this ultra modern swimming facility.
