Nigel & Linda Day
"When we moved to Cheltenham 20 years ago we spent some time looking for a good sized public swimming pool. After several unsuccessful searches we came across the Lido. We could not believe our luck to have this fabulous historic facility in our town and became regular visitors. Over time we learned about its history and the past and ongoing efforts people have made to preserve the Lido against multiple challenges.
Our volunteering started with a conversation in the pool with a new friend made there, who mentioned that help was needed at a forthcoming event. We agreed, as we had come to value the Lido so much and wanted to do whatever we could to help it continue. Therefore on one of the coldest wettest days of the year we stood and lane counted, trying (and mostly failing) to keep our counting sheets dry! Since then, we put the dates of the events on our year planner so we can help whenever possible and have been volunteers for many years, in various roles. It is extremely rewarding, not only to play our part in fundraising, but also to meet people and promote the Lido to new visitors. We can often advise and reassure participants. Many of the participants appreciate that the events cannot be run without volunteers. It is also satisfying to support the permanent Lido staff with increased demand from large events. Through our regular employment, we know how invaluable volunteers are for Charities.
Undoubtedly it can be hard work, with some early starts, but volunteering gives us a sense of ownership, reward in the sure knowledge that we are doing our bit to keep the Lido open for Cheltenham."
