To coincide with the start of the 2018 season, Sandford Parks Lido invested more than £28,000 in new thermally efficient covers for the Main and Children’s pools – this investment being primarily made to reduce energy loss whilst also replacing the old, many times repaired, energy inefficient units.
Following our ‘Zero to Landfill’ policy, Sandford Parks Lido looked at innovative ways in which we could re-use the old covers for the wider benefit of the community. After looking at the options available to us, we agreed that the old insulated covers could be cut up and reused as sleeping mats to help many of the homeless in Gloucestershire.
In late March 100+ sleeping mats were delivered to ‘Project Beacon’ of the Gloucester City Mission to be used both inside the new night shelter and also in the wider homeless community.
Sandford Parks Lido is grateful to Bence, the Builders Merchants of Cheltenham, who provided us with a number of wooden templates and knives with which to cut the 8 x 4 foot covers – without this kind help, the exercise would have been considerably harder!
